Olson Kundig is a Seattle-based design practice founded on the ideas that buildings can serve as a bridge between nature, culture and people, and that inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on people’s lives. Led by five owners, the firm’s work can be found across the globe, with projects as wide ranging as huts to high rises, homes—often for art collectors—to academic, cultural and civic projects, museums and exhibition design, places of worship, creative production, urban design and interior design.

Dress winter Casual Collective Concepts Boutique 7R6IqqCardigan winter Boutique winter XXI Cardigan Boutique Boutique XXI wdpd0XxFBq – – “For early ideation drawings, I love working large-scale so that drawing engages my whole body. Many of the shapes are based on what it feels like to draw them. Sometimes I’ll even briefly close my eyes while drawing, so I’m feeling the form in my mind with the edge of the pencil and am not inhibited by vision. These drawings are a visible expression of my love for the process of drawing.”

I have no faster way to describe what I imagine than by drawing it. New ideas come out of the process. When I see what a form looks like on a page, I can respond to it, iterate, draw back over it, add layers. For the past 14 months, I’ve been sketching Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square neighborhood. Many of the pages in the sketchbook for this project blend observation and imagination.”

For a Northern California project, our interior designers were inspired by the rocky coastal environment. Outcroppings of quartz diorite and coarse-grained sedimentary rock inspired the palette, which includes Kebony yellow pine siding and granite flooring. Dry, stacked rock on the exterior will weather over time, blending the home into the hillside.
